Question:
Our plating shop operation has approximately 35 different baths that require chemical monitoring on an on-going basis. Are there any newer methods available for performing the many titrations we have to do every day? T.G.
Answer:
Having been a chemist in my earlier life, my first response was to suggest hiring an additional chemist or two. However, this can be expensive, and good chemists are hard to find.
Instrumentation is available to help make your testing program more efficient and effective. One system that I particularly like uses an automatic titration system with computer control. The system allows you to perform almost all types of titrations: acid/base, redox, complexometric and precipitation reactions. The system allows the use of small samples and reduces the amount of time necessary for analysis. The computer will calculate concentrations as well as manipulate your data in a number of different ways.
The cost of this instrumentation will not "break the bank." Information about this type of equipment can be found on the Suppliers page or in the 2002 Products Finishing Directory and Technology Guide under Analytical Equipment, automatic solution titration.
