Last December I answered a question regarding the blackening of steel. In February, I added some additional information to my original answer. One of the readers of this column pointed out to me that it is important to be familiar with the Mil Spec that discusses the black oxide coatings of ferrous-based materials. The specification is MIL-DTL-13924D. It is available at http://assist.daps.dla.mil/online/start/.
