California legislatures have enacted a new law that will give local pollution control officials the power to issue immediate orders to stop polluting operations when violations pose an “imminent and substantial” danger, an action that targets metal finishers in the state.

The shut down orders will be temporary pending a hearing before an administrative board of review, and the new law goes into effect Jan. 1.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the new law was a result of Southern California officials working hard to shut down manufacturing plants — many of which are plating operations — that they deem have air quality issues.
