Question:

I am new to the plating industry and want to learn more about the processes used at our plant. At this moment I am particularly interested in nickel plating. Where should I start? N.P.

Answer:

Here is a brief list of references that will get you started in your understanding of nickel plating. Products Finishing's web site (www.pfonline.com) has at least one review paper on the subject. There is also a chapter on the subject in the Products Finishing 2002 Directory and Technology Guide. The Metal Finishing Guidebook & Directory, 2002 ed., has a chapter on the subject.

If you are looking for more details, International Nickel (INCO), 201-843-8600, has a 72-page book on the subject. The Nickel Development Institute has a web site (www.nidi.org) with a number of review papers on nickel plating.

Last, but not least, a book, Nickel and Chromium Plating, 3rd ed., J. K. Dennis and T. E. Such, is available from Metal Finishing Publications, 212- 633-3199.

If you read all of these references you will know more about nickel plating than many platers. Add some "hands-on" experience, and you will be in great shape!
