Nickel Plating Specifications
A customer has recently asked for nickel plate on steel components. The customer has no idea as to what should be requested. Is there a standard that I can give the customer so he can make an intelligent decision about his nickel plate requirements?
Q. A customer has recently asked for nickel plate on steel components. The customer has no idea as to what should be requested. Is there a standard that I can give the customer so he can make an intelligent decision about his nickel plate requirements? C.S.
A. You bet! The best place to find this information is in the ASTM B689-97(2003), Standard Specification for Electroplated Engineering Nickel Coatings, which is available from ASTM International, www.astm.org. This standard covers a number of different areas including:
Types of Deposit
- Nickel deposits containing no additives
- Nickel deposits containing various types of additives
- Nickel deposits containing dispersed submicron particles
The ASTM specification also discusses testing methods and sampling requirements.
If you are involved with nickel plating or specify nickel plating, you should be familiar with this specification.
