Powder Coating Plastics
Is there a specific additive that can be added to an injection molded ABS plastic part to allow it to accept a powder coating?
Q. Is there a specific additive that can be added to an injection molded ABS plastic part to allow it to accept a powder coating? D. B.
A. First of all make sure your plastic formula can withstand 250°F to melt and cure the powder coating. This is a requirement even when using UV-curable powder coatings. Then adding some carbon can increase the conductivity of the part allowing it to be more easily grounded. Grounding is important to apply the powder using standard electrostatic spray equipment. Of course test your part with a powder coating to determine that you obtain the desired result.
