Question:

We use high-temperature silicone plugs to mask threaded holes before we powder coat our parts. How do you clean baked on powder paint from the silicone plugs? W. S.

Answer:

There are several ways to remove coatings from silicone masks. One is to use chemical stripper agents. Select a stripper that will not attack the silicone and soak the parts in the stripper solution for the prescribed period of time. The second is tumbling the masks with a media to break the coating free and scrub it from the mask. Remember that these masks have a lifespan that is limited. Once they become hard and brittle, it is time to replace them. I am sure that all the masking suppliers will love to hear me say that these need to be replaced once the mask has reached the end of their useful life. But remember that they are considered to be consumable items.
