Because of the negative environmental and health effects related to chromium, finishers are looking for a replacement. Composite electroless nickel coatings may be one solution…
Chicago’s Amanda Beach leads the 2017 Products Finishing list recognizing tomorrow’s leaders in the finishing industry.
Electrolytic hard chromium plating (EHC) is a critical surface finishing technology that is used for applying functional coatings for corrosion and wear resistance to aircraft components in manufacturing operations and for re-build of worn or corroded components. However, EHC plating baths contain hexavalent chromium, which is a known carcinogen and environmental hazard. Therefore, the replacement of EHC in aircraft manufacturing activities and maintenance depots is a high priority for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
Powder coating remains the fastest growing industrial finishing method in North America, currently representing about 15 percent of the total market. About 5,000 industrial finishers in North America apply powder to a countless array of products for a high quality and durable finish, resisting scratches, corrosion, abrasion, chemicals and detergents. The powder coating process also maximizes production, cuts costs, improves efficiency and offers maximum compliance with environmental regulations.
This paper is an expanded treatment of the second part of the William Blum Lecture Dr. Antler presented at Sur/Fin 1988 by Dr. Morton Antler. Subjects covered include substrate and lubrication effects on the tribology of contact finishes.

Once again, the attendees - more than 100 participants and over 25 speakers - were given straight talk and found that the elections of 2010 had spawned a new climate in Washington, more receptive to promoting industry.
To determine the most cost-effective materials to use in a corrosive environment, manufacturers routinely test raw materials, partial assemblies, randomly selected production pieces, finished items, returned goods, and competitors’ products.
