To protect and preserve the brass plating, we coat these parts with a clear lacquer using a conventional air spray gun. Needless to say, we get poor coverage on the parts with a lot of overspray. Consequently we use a lot of lacquer. Because of the rising prices of coating materials, I’ve been asked by management to reduce our manufacturing costs.

Our customer has requested .004-inch (100µ, 4 mil) coating thickness on 6061-T6. We normally anodize this part to .002-inch thickness. Our process is 28 V, bath temperature 32°F, for 1 hr. We are not sure of exactly what the best procedure is to hardcoat anodize to this coating thickness.

One of our customers sends their extrusions to an outside anodizer near their plant. They sent us some samples of their anodized parts that were exhibiting a condition that looked like small snowflakes all over the part.

We have a finishing room at one of our plants, and we have outsourced the plating. We also did pickling and bright dip in the room, and we now want to decontaminate it so that we can sell the equipment, or at least dispose of it properly. Our main concerns are cyanide, silver and nickel.

We have a captive metal finishing operation and are looking at a process that will have a waste stream with 10,000 ppm Chemical Oxygen Demand at an average flow rate of 4 gal/min that will be discharging into our city’s wastewater treatment facility, which has a capacity of 2.5 million gal/day. Is this a large load for such a facility?

I work in quality control for a facade company and have some questions about the boiling adhesion test for powder coating.

We find that we lose anywhere from 5–8% of the oven’s air volume depending on plant conditions (shipping doors opening and closing, etc.). We have air return soft seal ducting from the part openings back to the burner box (roof-mounted) and have also tried a hard seal, but the hard seal made things worse.

I need some basic information on filtration in the plating shop. My major concern is sulfate copper and Watts nickel.
