Strike Three!

We’ve just received an order that requires plating a 17-4 PH stainless steel. I’ve been told that either a sulfamate or a Wood’s nickel strike will work well on this particular steel. Which one would you suggest?

Q: We’ve just received an order that requires plating a 17-4 PH stainless steel. I’ve been told that either a sulfamate or a Wood’s nickel strike will work well on this particular steel. Which one would you suggest? N. J.

A: I recommend you use a Wood’s nickel strike on this particular base material. 17-4 stainless steel is an age-hardenable stainless steel and generally, Wood’s nickel does a better job as a strike on this type of substrate.
