More About Solvent Attack on Plastic
I am a materials engineer for an auto parts manufacturer. We supply plastic components to the industry, so I have a lot of experience in molding and painting plastics. You are usually right on the money, and your response to the person having solvent attack on his ductile plastics was close. He also has a number of other options.

I am the manager of manufacturing for a company located in the Seattle, Wash., area that supplies detail parts, primarily to the aerospace industry. One of my responsibilities is the paint line, where we apply water-based paints and primers, as well as urethanes and clear base coat paints. Where can I find a training class for new painters?

We get pinholes and small blisters in the paint film on our aluminum equipment enclosures. There are also, on occasion, table-salt-size crystals on the surface that can be brushed off. Can you tell me what is going on and how durable the finish will be outdoors? What questions should we be asking the vendors?

Read MoreDry Film Lubricant Problem
We are applying a dry-film lubricant on small bolts, nuts and washers using the dip-spin coating method. In many cases, we are faced with parts sticking together after curing and, as a result, 10 percent of these parts must be reprocessed. The coating is cured in a tunnel oven. I think some kind of additional process should be done before curing in order to keep parts from sticking together, but I do not know exactly what to do.

In our manufacturing process we apply adhesive coatings over certain textile braid for reinforced rubber hose constructions. On other hose items, we apply a lacquer coating over the textile braid. In order to dry out the lacquer coatings, the hose travels vertically through a 50-ft-high tower, passing through a series of electric heating elements. The liquids are applied by spraying. We would like to investigate the possibility of a more updated arrangement, such as electrostatic spraying. What do you suggest?

I am the machine shop supervisor for a company that makes indoor exercising equipment. Some of the component parts are electroplated while others are painted. We buy these parts already painted since we have no painting equipment in our shop at this time. We are interested in setting up a paint line for our steel parts that will be a fast-acting process. We want this process to give the steel a durable black or gray finish. The paint will be applied on hardened steel parts. The two types of pieces are ½ inch in diameter by one inch long, and one inch in diameter by one inch long. We want to paint 10,000 pieces per week with a black or gray color.

One of our customers is inquiring about the least expensive, most easily applied and most corrosion resistant finish system for steel parts. He needs to have good protection against the effects of seaside atmospheres. The parts will be exposed to temperatures ranging from -50ºF to 150ºF. Appearance is not an issue here, just cost and lasting corrosion protection.
