The February dinner meeting of the Chicago Midwest Chapter of the NASF will feature FBI Special Agent Kenneth “K.C.” Bixby discussing “Cyber Theft/Protecting Your Cyber World.” The meeting, which includes the Mid-West Fastener Association, will be at 6 p.m. on February 22, at Belvedere Banquets, 1170 W. Devon Ave., in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

Cyber attackers have many faces, from local high school students to elaborate overseas operations. These hackers use various techniques that cause companies severe damage, and often, months go by without these breaches being discovered. Learn from an FBI expert how to identify a cyber breach, who to notify and what procedures to put in place to avoid such an intrusion. The theft of intellectual property or trade secret information may cost the U.S. between $300-$400 billion dollars a year and can result in the net loss of millions of jobs. The protection of business data, engineering secrets, email accounts, customer lists, etc. is of great importance to our economy. This presentation will describe some of the cyber and insider threats to business that exist and suggest some possible mitigations. The presentation will also highlight the importance of working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to neutralize threats to business and academia. During this presentation, you will learn the primary methods of computer intrusion and mitigations for protecting yourself against cyber and insider threats. You will also find out about the importance of leveraging state and federal resources to defeat these threats.
