Powder Coating and Metal Plating
Question: One advantage of powder coating and clear coats is that it provides a smooth base for further metal plating, for example, chroming of plastics or automotive wheels without hex chrome.
Question:
One advantage of powder coating and clear coats is that it provides a smooth base for further metal plating, for example, chroming of plastics or automotive wheels without hex chrome. We have done some work with aluminum and chrome and find it very economical and ecological. Would you have any comments as for its value in the marketplace? M.S.
Answer:
We discussed this very topic not too long ago. Powder coatings are used as "filler-primers" on aluminum wheels, allowing vacuum metalizing to provide the chrome-like appearance, and finally clear powder coated to provide protection. This method competes with the arduous buffing and polishing that precedes a plating operation. I can't comment on the commercial value of this process, but I know that it still is not as widespread as the plating operation.
