Silver-Look Powder Finish

Could we find a powder technology with the appearance of chrome? Could we find a new, environmentally friendly solution for the chrome? Do you know any other solution to get the same appearance as bright chrome for furniture finish covering?

Plating on Tellurium Copper Alloys Plating on Tellurium Copper Alloys

I cannot achieve uniform adhesion of either Wood’s nickel or cyanide copper on C14500, tellurium-bearing copper. I clean using reverse current followed by 11 percent HCl, a Wood’s nickel strike and a silver strike. After stripping the failed plate and repeating the process, I sometimes have much better adhesion. Is this due to the aggressive etch provided by the stripping process or better oxide removal provided by the process?

Powder on Tri-Chrome Treatment

We have been coating aluminum alloys for some time with inconsistent field performance of the coating. Following your advice,we are now having a tri-chrome pretreatment process being done at a local vendor on all of our aluminum castings. So far our performance is excellent, but we are seeing failures in testing on a new product in A413 alloy. Our casting vendor tells us A380 would be much more suitable. Do you see any issues in powder coating this alloy now that we are doing the tri-chrome pretreatment process?

More on Magnetic Parts

In the November 2011 issue of Products Finishing I briefly discussed problems with plating magnetic parts. One of my readers (also a student of mine some 25 years ago) sent me an email mentioning some other causes of parts becoming magnetic. One has to do with the machining and preparation of the parts.

Dip-Spin Painting Method

I am the machine shop supervisor for a company that makes indoor exercising equipment. Some of the component parts are electroplated while others are painted. We buy these parts already painted since we have no painting equipment in our shop at this time. We are interested in setting up a paint line for our steel parts that will be a fast-acting process. We want this process to give the steel a durable black or gray finish. The paint will be applied on hardened steel parts. The two types of pieces are ½ inch in diameter by one inch long, and one inch in diameter by one inch long. We want to paint 10,000 pieces per week with a black or gray color.

Ask The Expert: Corrosion Under Powder Coating

Q. We’re powder coating on sheets of cold-rolled closed annealed parts. We found that, after some days, the color is peeling off, and we have found corrosion beneath that. Is there a solution, or should we switch to another process?
