DuPont Selling off Paint, Powder Coating Division

Reports say that DuPont is exploring a sale of the division for as much as $4 billion. Bloomberg newspapers said that DuPont has hired Credit Suisse to look for potential buyers, and that it has hired Greenhill & Co. to separately handle a sale of a powder-coatings unit within the division. According to financial reports, DuPont’s performance coatings business accounted for 12 percent of DuPont’s $31.5 billion in revenue last year.

Gas Use

We have been reviewing the costs of operating for our powder coating line and notice that gas is a big part of it. We have two heated stages in our washer, a dry-off oven, a cure oven and a burn-off oven. Can you give us any advice on ways to cut our gas use?

Pinholes in Powder

We have a problem with a concentration of fine, dense pinholes in our powder film. The coating is a urethane-polyester that is applied over a part that has been electro-coated. The substrate is sheet metal. The problem is much worse when the powder film is heavier.

Metal Preparation of Steel

We are planning to powder coat the part with a TGIC polyester, but we do not have a system yet. Will it be acceptable to blast the surface and not add any chemical pretreatment? Do I need a primer coat under the TGIC polyester?

New Coatings/Finishing Resource Center to Open in Virginia

An international coatings training and research center will be built in Halifax County in Virginia as the American Wood Finishing Institute relocates their corporate headquarters and training center from New Jersey. The “Center for Coatings and Application Research and Education” will create about 15 jobs thanks to a $1,052,000 grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission to prepare its new quarters and to buy equipment.
