Our shop specializes in blackening of 300 and 400 series stainless steel. We sporadically have trouble with smut, staining and color differences on the parts. What can we do to minimize these problems?

I have a problem dealing with polymerization of an alkyd paint. Occasionally a rubber-like layer will form on top of the paint. When we mix in the rubber-like layer, the paint becomes useless to us because it now contains particles that clog our spray guns. If you are familiar with these types of paints, I would certainly appreciate receiving any information as to whether or not the rubber-like layer is caused by heat, air or both.

Smut On Titanium Parts
I use a Nitric/HF bath to etch titanium. Afterwards I desmut in 45% by volume nitric acid solution. Recently I have been noticing smut on parts. The bath is eight years old. Any suggestions?

We recently we tried a trivalent yellow conversion coating, but after processing 30–40 jobs we observe black patches on the jobs immediately after processing.
