AES Research Project #41: Plating on Aluminum, Part 1: A Literature Review

Originally published in 1978, this paper was the first of several on AES Research Project #41, a study of plating on aluminum, at the National Institute for Science and Technology.  A review of immersion pretreatments for the plating on aluminum is presented.  The zincate pretreatments dominate the literature, but innovations were reported which offer improved adhesion and corrosion performance.  Finally, an updated bio on Dr. Lashmore’s work through the years is offered.

Electro-codeposition of MCrAlY Coatings for Advanced Gas Turbine Applications - 12th Quarterly Research Report

The aim of this research is to seek a sulfur-free plating solution for electro-codeposition of (Ni,Co)-CrAlY composite coatings.  In this quarter, the coating plated in the sulfur-free, all-chloride plating solution with sodium lauryl sulfate wetting agent showed the best oxidation performance. This coating also demonstrated much better oxidation resistance that the bare CMSX-4 alloy.

III. The Effects of Shields and Baffles on the Distribution of Functional Chromium Electrodeposits

This is the third of three combined papers that received the AESF Gold Medal Award for Best Paper published in Plating & Surface Finishing in 1989.  Insulating shields and baffles redirect the flow of current and affect the thickness distribution of chromium and other electrodeposits. Many examples of these useful devices for improving the uniformity of chromium deposits are described.
